University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point graduate assistantship opportunity in sustainable communities.
Bright, energetic students interested in sustainability and international best cases of sustainable communities are invited to apply as candidates for the M.S. degree in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). This assistantship is provided via grant funds to the Global Environmental Management Education Center (GEM) beginning spring semester, January 2007. As a member of our collaborative GEM team, the successful candidate will complete a two-year graduate program course of study with a M.S. thesis focused on developing a portfolio of best case studies of sustainable communities from around the world. Eligibility: B.S. degree in a social science, international studies, natural resources, business, or related field. Strong verbal skills, foreign language proficiency, understanding of sustainability concept, and willingness to travel in underdeveloped countries important.
Desired Interests/
Experiences in SustainableDevelopment or International Studies:
Working knowledge of human dimensions of natural resource management, community or regional planning, organizational management, or sustainable development. Work or internship experience, preferably overseas, in community development, applied modeling, or other sustainable development related activity especially in indigenous/traditional communities. Computer proficiency in database or spreadsheet, GIS, and/or web design software.
Stipend: US$15,000 per year for two years pending satisfactory performance, fringe benefits
including health care coverage, plus travel and research expenses paid.
Duration: Two years, beginning January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2008.

This opportunity features both a literature review of existing case studies of sustainable communities in the USA and abroad, and primary research via direct interviews and site surveys in model communities overseas that have or are engaged in significant steps towards sustainability. A collection of best cases will be developed and analyzed for emergent attributes and strategies for success.
