This Executive Summary provides a brief overview of the key findings and
decisions that are a part of the proposed National Strategy for Integrated
Municipal Solid Waste Management. It is provided to enable policy and decision
makers, industry and the public to understand, with a minimum of reading, the
plans of the Central Government for correcting the current deficiencies of
municipal solid waste management in Egypt.
solid waste [MSW] only. Municipal solid waste is combination of solid wastes
from residential, commercial, institutional and industrial non-process/nonhazardous
wastes. Definitions are included in Section I of the strategy.
Studies and surveys have clearly indicated that the problems associated with
municipal solid waste management are among the most serious environmental
problems in Egypt. The current management method of choice for MSW in Egypt
is the uncontrolled open [and frequently burning] dumps and uncontrolled
accumulations of solid waste.
