Mapping People's Forests: The Role of Mapping in Planning Community-based Management of Conservation Areas in Indonesia

This PeFor discussion paper focuses on a conservation organization's invovement in mapping indigenous lands for the purposes of creating protected area borders and management plans. Dr. Eghenter reviews WWF-Indonesia's mapping experiences associated with protected areas in three places: Kayan Mentarang National Park in East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo: Lorentz National Park in Irian Jaya (Papua) on the island of New Guinea; and several small reserves in the province of Nusa Tenggara on the islamds of Timor, Lombok and Sumba. Most of the author's direct experience and insights are derived from her work in Kayan Mentarang. Readers who are interested in understanding more about WWF's Kayan Menttarang project can find additional details in Colchester and EMI (1999). This report, is one of a series of publications that came out of the Biodiversity Support Program's People, Forests, and Reefs (PeForR)Program in 2000. Community mapping is a common tool in of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) repertoire to map local management and use of resources, and indigenous claimes to customary land.
