USAID Global Development Alliance with Rare and Bloomberg

USAID Philippines and Rare, with partners Bloomberg Philanthropies, Pinoy Micro-Enterprise Foundation and Encourage Capital, established a Global Development Alliance to expand the use of managed access to strengthen small-scale fisheries.

USAID Philippines and Rare, with partners Bloomberg Philanthropies, Pinoy Micro-Enterprise Foundation and Encourage Capital, established a Global Development Alliance to advance economic incentives for conserving biodiversity and sustainably managing local fisheries through managed access. An award of $2.39 million from USAID will leverage over $6 million in private sector funds, for a total investment of over $8.4 million.

Rare is currently identifying and testing approaches that will improve the socioeconomic returns of fisheries in a way that supports greater biodiversity and sustainability, while maintaining the livelihoods of fishers. So far, the initiative has undertaken stock assessments, a value chain study and sustainable seafood sourcing efforts to establish the link between fish caught through responsible fishing and increases in income or improved livelihoods.

Forthcoming.
