Last week, African Biodiversity Conservation held an event on ICT and conservation at The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA, USA where a lot of interesting discussion ensued.

Supplemental resources, including the USAID Report on ICT and conservation, are available here.

  • SMART is a spatial monitoring and reporting tool being piloted in 22 sites across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to improve intelligence for conservation defense. The open source, non-proprietary software enables protected area managers and indigenous and local people input data as they patrol areas prone to poaching.  The system supports data-gathering, evaluation, and monitoring in an aim for better informed planning and strategy around conservation.
  • Nir Tenenbaum outlines how unmanned aerial vehicles can play a role in conservation by "adapting advanced solutions to specific challenges of wildlife management, law enforcement, and habitat control." If you're interested, you might check out Conservation Drones.
