REDD+--Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks--is a major global initiative that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving rural livelihoods and governance. The USAID-funded Forest Carbon, Markets and Communities (FCMC) project supported learning, capacity building and best practices in REDD+ from 2010-2015. Early on in the project,FCMC identified gender and food security as being central to the outcomes of REDD+, especially in the humid forest context. These connections are important because of the centrality of shifting cultivation ("slash and burn") as a farming system and the critical role of women in those systems. Shifting cultivation was given as a key driver of deforestation in many countries' REDD+ analyses, including Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon. As such FCMC sought to determine how REDD+ initiatives were dealing with shifting cultivation and how efforts did and could impact food security and women's labor burden, among other questions. This Annex to the report on Shifting Cultivation, Gender and REDD+ details field level observations and interviews at 28 localities on 8 REDD+ and related projects in DRC and Cameroon. These field studies provide a wealth of insight into initial project designs and working relations among actors as well as implications for reducing deforestation, food security and gender equality and women's empowerment.
