Social Geographic Information Systems (SGIS): Integrating GIS and Participatory Mapping

by Carmen Tedesco last modified Jan 10, 2013 11:40 AM

Addresses GIS from a social science / participatory perspective. It critiques mainstream GIS and puts forward an approach called "Social GIS," which combines GIS and Participatory Mapping (PM). The paper among others presents a model for how to go apply GIS within a broader, more socially and culturally sensitive way. The paper was written as a background for a paper, authored jointly with Lauren N. Sorkin and Jim Tarrant, to be delivered at the ESRI US meeting in San Diego in June 2007.
