EVENT: Biodiversity and Forestry Seminar Series, November 10, 2010: Innovative Financing for Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Services.

by drussell — last modified Jan 10, 2013 07:30 AM USAID TransLinks
USAID’s Biodiversity and Forestry Team hosts "extended team meetings" open to anyone with a professional interest in forestry and biodiversity conservation. This tradition has evolved into a Fall and Spring seminar series. At each seminar, a speaker (or speakers) presents an issue of interest, followed by a question and answer session. Seminars focus on broader topics that are thematic or technical in nature, rather than specific projects supported by USAID.

In this seminar, Tundi Agardy and Winnie Lau will present a new compendium of information on marine markets and will discuss the findings of the La Paz Katoomba Meeting. Agardy and Lau will also present progress being made in demonstration projects under the MARES Program.

Marine and coastal ecosystem services are critically important for humanity everywhere, yet resources to protect these services are generally lacking. Innovative financing, including the development of coastal Payments for Ecosystem Services schemes, marine biodiversity offsets, and conservation banking, can generate much needed funds to better manage coastal and marine systems, and facilitate engagement of local communities in their management. A workshop held last week in La Paz, Mexico has generated a blueprint for action to catalyze the use of innovative financing which builds on the significant momentum generated by two prior marine-focused Katoomba meetings in California and Vietnam.

This seminar is brought to you by the USAID-funded TRANSLINKS program and its partners
