Environmental impact assessment first emerged in the United States after passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1970. Over time nearly every country in the world has adopted the approach as its primary tool for mitigating the environmental impacts of major projects (e.g., energy, mining and infrastructure). But there is an increasing recognition that the challenges of sustainable development require new thinking about how to achieve economic, social, and environmental goals. This is driving a greater focus on mitigation principles and the development of a next generation of mitigation policies.
