The Business and Biodiversity Offsets Programme, the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) will co-host a major conference in London in June 2014 to bring together some 300 representatives from companies, financial institutions, governments and civil society with an interest in demonstrating no net loss and preferably a net gain of biodiversity.

Commitment continues to grow by governments, intergovernmental bodies, banks, companies and non-governmental organizations to ‘No Net Loss’ and a ‘Net Positive Impact’ on biodiversity. For example:

  • Many national governments have recently announced or are developing policies to regulate biodiversity offsets.
  • The EU is developing a No Net Loss Initiative for 2015.
  • Since 1 January 2012, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Equator Principles Association require clients with impacts on natural and critical habitat to demonstrate no net loss and a net gain of biodiversity, respectively.
  • IUCN – The World Conservation Union is developing a policy on biodiversity offsets by November 2014.

The time is right to gather experts together to take stock of the progress made and challenges that remain in acheiving no net loss, and learn from each other. Thisconference flyer in A4 format and Letter format provides more information about this two-day conference. The conference will aim to allow as large a number as possible of organizations working on the design and implementation of mitigation measures (including offsets and compensation), policies and safeguards to share their experiences. If you would like to be added to the BBOP Community of Practice mailing list to be kept informed of this event and other activities, please send an email to: bbop@forest-trends.org.

Updates on the conference will also be posted to this site in the coming months. We hope to see you in London!

BBOP hosts occasional meetings for the broader Community of Practice. A summary and presentations made at the most recent meeting, held with the EU No Net Loss Working Group can be found here.
