Delelegn and a crew of three other pick up milk twice a day—morning and evening—from Ada'a Dairy Cooperative's collection sites in Bishoftu, Oromia, Ethiopia. After the milk is processed, the containers are washed and re-deployed to the collection centers before the next collection time.A USAID livestock development project in the region, part of Feed the Future, focuses on fostering growth and reducing poverty through improving the productivity and competitiveness of Ethiopia’s livestock value chains (Feed the Future photo contest).

Salimata Sagnol feeds her chickens outside their coop in the village of Tengréla, Burkina Faso. A U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation program funded a package of agricultural trainings along with construction materials for her chicken coop and ongoing technical support for Sagnol and other rural farmers like her.MCC is investing $141 million to help rural farmers, many of them women, improve animal farming techniques and gain access to local markets. With her chickens now sheltered, Sagnol can look to the future and focus on improving her marketing and business strategy (Feed the Future photo contest).

Using modern technology like irrigation and better agricultural practices, as well as being linked to one of Zimbabwe’s major banana marketing companies, helps ensure a reliable source of income and food security for smallholder banana farmers like this one in Zimbabwe.

Nursery school children enjoy a snack of peanut butter on cassava bread in Aranaputa, Guyana.The peanuts they are eating were provided by farmers in the region, supported by the Peanut and Mycotoxin Innovation Lab. Local cottage industries processed the peanuts, turning them into peanut butter for the children to eat at school.This program was set up in seven villages throughout the region, serving 1,400 school kids one snack per day. Due to the success of the project, this has been expanded to 47 villages and now serves 4,300 children per day (Feed the Future)
